Shackelford & Associates has been providing top-quality appraisals since 1993, and we take our commitment to quality appraisals seriously. We invest in furthering our appraisal education above and beyond typical pre-licensing and continuing education requirements through additional courses covering many different types of appraisal concentrations and through our large library of publications in office as well as through in depth research into each market within our coverage area. We are continually striving to provide our clients with the highest quality appraisal reports.
We have offices in Raleigh and Greenville, allowing us to offer our clients a large area of coverage, throughout the Triangle and Eastern North Carolina.

Our Team
Jay Shackelford, MAI, SRA
Jay Shackelford began appraising for the firm in 2001 before becoming owner in 2005. Jay is a certified general appraiser and holds the prestigious MAI and SRA designations with the Appraisal Institute. He is an approved appraiser for the VA and is both FHA and Yellow Book certified. In addition, he is a Department of Revenue Certified Appraiser and a licensed real estate broker. Jay is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He currently resides in Winterville with his wife Laura, and twin daughters, Jeri and Jonna.
Russell Adams, MAI, SRA
Russell Adams began his appraisal career with Shackelford & Associates in 2010 and became partner in 2017. Russell has his certified general license and holds the prestigious MAI and SRA designations with the Appraisal Institute. He is currently a candidate for designation with the CCIM Institute. Russell has experience with a wide range of property types including office, retail, multifamily, self-storage, and complex residential assignments. He is a graduate of East Carolina University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Russell was raised in eastern North Carolina and now works out of our Raleigh office.
Matt Hawk, MAI, ARA
Matt Hawk started his appraisal career with Shackelford & Associates in 2005. Matt is a certified general appraiser and holds the MAI designation with the Appraisal Institute, and ARA designation with the America Society of Farm Managers & Rural Appraisers. He performs appraisals on a wide variety of commercial properties including lodging and hospitality, shopping centers, office complexes, industrial properties, subdivisions, and conservation easements. Matt also has significant experience with agricultural properties including cropland, timberland, swine farms, and poultry houses. Matt is experienced in condemnation work and has testified as an expert witness on the county, state, and federal levels. He recently moved from Greenville and now works out of our Raleigh office.
R. Eric Williams, MA, MAI
Eric Williams started with Shackelford & Associates in 2024, and Eric has his Certified General license in North Carolina, Texas and Florida; and holds the prestigious MAI designation with the Appraisal Institute. Eric has 30+ years’ experience with a wide range of property types including office, retail, self-storage, industrial, churches, schools and complex residential assignments. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a B.S. in Human Resources Management with a concentration in Business Administration. Eric also holds a Master’s Degree in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. Eric currently works out of the Greenville office where he currently resides with his family, and he fervently hopes Army wins the Army/Navy game into perpetuity.
Alan Joyner
Alan Joyner began his appraisal career with the firm in 1996. Alan is a state certified residential appraiser who is FHA certified and on the VA’s approved panel. He has experience appraising all types of residential real estate in Eastern North Carolina including single-family, multifamily, luxury homes, waterfront properties, large estates, and other complex assignments. Prior to becoming an appraiser, Alan spent 14 years in sales and marketing. He is a graduate of East Carolina University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Alan was born in Rocky Mount and now works out of our Greenville office.
Lynnette Martin
Lynnette Martin joined the team in June 2005 in a secretarial capacity; completed appraisal classes and secured her license in December 2005 when she joined the appraisal team. Holding the Certified Residential appraisal license, she specializes in historic and manufactured dwellings and is VA and FHA certified. Her appraisal experience ranges from single-family and multifamily to manufactured homes and vacant land. Her single-family dwelling experience includes site-built, modular, log homes, historic properties, and properties valued at over $1 million.
Lynnette has attended Blue Ridge Tech, Martin Community College, and Lenoir Community College with courses in business, accounting, and appraisal. Born and raised in Martin County, she and her family have lived in the Lenoir/Jones County area for over 35 years. Lynnette is married and has two married children and three grandchildren.

Laura Shackelford
Laura Shackelford began working with the company in 2003 as office manager. She later received her appraisal license and in 2005 she purchased the company along with her husband Jay. Laura is a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser with experience in a broad range of property types, including a variety of commercial properties in addition to residential properties. She is also a licensed real estate broker. Laura is FHA certified and has experience in numerous types of appraisals including relocations, foreclosures, waterfront, commercial properties, large estates, manufactured homes, and farmland. She currently resides in Winterville with her husband Jay, and twin daughters, Jeri and Jonna.
Audrey Stewart
Audrey Stewart joined our team in 2018 as a Registered Trainee prior to becoming a Certified Residential Appraiser. Prior to going into the appraisal business, Audrey worked in the commercial banking sector for 11 years. She is experienced in appraising all types of residential real estate, including complex land, single-family, and multifamily properties. She also has experience in appraising a variety of commercial properties. Audrey graduated from the University of Georgia in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Finance. She currently resides in Raleigh with her husband, two children, rescue dog and cat.
Thad Dove
Thad Dove joined our team in July 2023 as a Certified General Appraiser. Thad is experienced in appraising a variety of agricultural purpose property types including, production row crop land, production woodland, recreational property, swine facilities, poultry facilities, large acreage homesteads, and grain facilities. Prior to going into the appraisal industry, Thad worked in the financial industry as a mortgage and commercial lender, with several community banks. He also served as a lender and consumer compliance officer in the Farm Credit system. Thad is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a graduate of Lenoir Community College with an Associates of Arts in Aviation Management and Career Pilot Technology. Thad currently lives in Greenville with his wife.
Lori Spiece
Lori Spiece joined the firm in 2024 as a Certified Residential Appraiser. Prior to becoming an Appraiser, Lori spent 21 years in private industry (forestry and manufacturing) in accounting, finance and business planning. Lori is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Relations and a Minor in Spanish. In 2004, Lori earned her MBA from East Carolina University, and she has been a North Carolina Licensed Broker since 2005. Her coverage area primarily includes counties in coastal and eastern North Carolina, specializing in new construction, rural properties and manufactured homes; Lori is FHA certified. She is a native of New Bern, where she currently resides with her husband, Brandon; she has one adult son, Patrick, who makes his home in Greenville.
Walter Wilson
Walter Wilson joined our team in 2013 as a Registered Trainee. Walter is experienced in appraising a variety of property types, including single-family residential, multifamily, and vacant land. He also has experience in commercial properties and specializes in large residential land tracts. Walter has completed the educational requirements and expects to pursue a license upgrade soon.
Prior to going into the appraisal business, Walter served with a large state-wide law enforcement agency and retired in 2009, after 30 years of service. During this time, he worked his way through the ranks and had the privilege to serve in various leadership roles. Walter is a graduate of Campbell University with a Bachelor of Applied Science. He is also a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy and The Southern Police Institute. Walter currently lives in Greenville with his wife.

Jeong Bang
Jeong Bang joined Shackelford & Associates in 2021 as a Registered Trainee. Jeong has gained experience appraising a variety of residential properties while working towards his certification. He is also a real estate broker with over 18 years of experience in the Triangle area. His brokerage background and knowledge of the market has proved to be a valuable asset to the firm. Jeong is a graduate of North Carolina State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He now lives in Apex with his wife and two daughters.
Kim Rucker
Kim Rucker joined our firm in 2012 as a part-time secretary, bringing 9 years of administrative experience within an office setting. She progressively began working full-time and took over the role of office manager. Over this time period, she began assisting appraisers with research and data entry. This experience led to an easy transition into her current role as a full-time appraiser. Kim graduated Magna Cum Laude from East Carolina University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Management. Originally from the northeastern part of the state, she currently resides in Greenville with her two children.
Samantha Courson
Samantha Courson joined our team as an executive assistant in 2021. Her primary responsibilities include answering and returning phone calls, maintaining email correspondences, assisting with scheduling and maintaining appraisal orders, and general administrative work. Prior to joining the appraisal industry she worked within the hospitality industry for six years. Samantha is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. Originally from the Raleigh area, she currently resides within Bath with her husband and son.
